Frida Kahlo - Self Portrait 1940

She had a trajic life starting with a car crash in which an iron handrail impaled her abdomen, piercing her uterus.
She always painted herself to be less attractive than she actually was, I think that this was maybe because as a result of the crash she was unable to have children, which maybe made her feel less womanly.
From looking at this painting it looks like she is making herself into an animal that should live amongst other animals in the jungle. The hummingbird around her neck also is said to resemble death.

Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla

This image shows a gallery floor on which charcoal drawings of dancers have been drawn. ('Landmarks (footprints'). There was then an exhibition of people dancing over this floor which would then cause the charcoal to smudge and rearrange, creating a whole different look. I really like the way the artists have been able to incorporate many different people into the making of their work. I think that the marks that would have been created by people walking and dancing over these drawings would add movement and almost look like the blur that might be seen if you were frantically dancing around!?!???

The Chapman Brothers

The Chapman Brothers both graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1990. They have worked collaboratively ever since.
This image shows one of the Chapman Brothers McDonalds sculptures in the style of a piece of african art. I like their art as it is primarily designed to shock people and to get a reaction. They were in the short list for winning the turner prize in 2003 along with Grayson Perry.
The Chapman Brothers also bought some sketches by Goya at an auction and then worked over them to 'improve' them and then went on to put them in their own exibition passing them off as their own, which also caused a stir and a lot of criticism.

Mark Jenkins - Street Installations

I found these pictures after typing 'installations' into the google search. They are by Mark Jenkins and they are from the 'Storker Project' I really like theway he has taken objects from different environments and plced them in the middle of cities. The actual objects are made out of clear cellotape. I would be interested in trying to recreate this.

Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol Collaboration

This pice is called Arm and Hammer II. When Warhol and Basquiat collaborated, Warhol would usually start a piece and then pass it over to Basquiat who would then finish it. I can definately see both styles of the two artists in this piece, which, to me, shows that they collaborated and worked alongside each other with a definate focus and understanding.

Claes Oldenburg

This image shows Claes Oldenburg's Apple Core. He took normal, everyday objects and scaled them up. I really like the simplicity of this idea, but the way that it has a big impact and presence once created. I understand that he collaborated with other people in order to achive some of the larger peices that he has done, although I dont know if he did with this one as it is only approx. 3m tall.

Julian Opie - Blur album cover

I really like the simplicity of the faces, and the simple, bright, clean colours used.
I would be interested in trying to recreate this style of working on pictures of people I know and/or various objects.

Vito Acconci - City of Words

Tim Head - Light Rain

This photgraph shows road reflectors (cats eyes?) on a steel mesh support and is 17m high and 7m wide. I really like the brightness of this and the fact that it does not require electricity... (if they are cats eyes..??!)

Paul DeMarinis

Photo of an installation. He is known as being an 'electronic media artist', and has been working with the theme of 'overlap between human communication and technology'. This picture shows an installation where sounds and sensations occur when the objects are touched.

The First Post!!!

This is the first post of the first New Media Applications session.
I am quite excited about starting this project as I have never used a blog or kept any of my research online in this way.
I'm looking forward to posting various different examples of 'New Media Art' that I am interested in.
