She had a trajic life starting with a car crash in which an iron handrail impaled her abdomen, piercing her uterus.
She always painted herself to be less attractive than she actually was, I think that this was maybe because as a result of the crash she was unable to have children, which maybe made her feel less womanly.
From looking at this painting it looks like she is making herself into an animal that should live amongst other animals in the jungle. The hummingbird around her neck also is said to resemble death.
